| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Akshay Kumar started the year with Patiala House and his biggest gain from the film was an all around appreciation that he won for this performance there. Now a couple of months later, he is ready with Thank You that takes him in a far more commercial zone. As the film hits the screens today, Akshay Kumar talks about his love for commercial cinema, reason behind him going slow when it comes to making serious cinema and whether he has turned his back to such films for good. Don't you find it ironical that box office and appreciation don't quite go hand in hand always? You saw that happening with Patiala House. Does that annoy or amuse you? It's completely understandable and it happens not only in Bollywood but also in Hollywood. How many times do you see an Oscar winning movie smash records at the Box Office? Not many let me tell you. Recently The King's Speech - a remarkable film released, how many average Joes do you know went to see it and appreciated it? But yes, it will go down in cinematic history and quite rightly so. The biggest movie of all time - Avatar - didn't even win an Oscar for 'Best Film'! It's the way the system works and I have to agree with it. Commercial cinema should be treated with a commercial response and artistic cinema should be treated like art. Such films are loved and admired for centuries but don't quite find a place in everyone's household! It's just the way it works. How many times do you see an Oscar winning movie smash records at the Box Office? Guess you had to content yourself with the critical acclaim you earned for yourself with Patiala House? I am extremely proud of Patiala House and I mean that very sincerely. We all knew from the beginning that it was never going to be a commercial movie. But sometimes in life when an actor and director come together, their aim isn't to smash records or become the next mass hysteria. Sometimes a whisper of appreciation can be enough. As long as the producers don't suffer, I think some movies are made to be admired, to be dwelled upon and quietly remembered & cherished. I haven't felt the kind of love & support from my industry or our media in a long time as I have done because of Patiala House. I loved the movie and the critical acclaim was indeed much appreciated. There was no screaming, no shouting, our movie quietly came, made many a great man cry and left cinema halls with respect and appreciation. I am more than happy, I am thankful. Guess that was an effort to shift from 'always an entertainer' image into serious cinema. I am too wise to even think or speak the words of 'Rest assured there will be a terrific opening' I have nothing to prove in that sense. Everyone knows that I am capable of serious cinema; my track record proves that. Waqt is an example. It's me; I choose not to make many serious movies as I know serious cinema and mass collections do not often mix. I believe in commercial entertaining since that is where the happiness of audiences and producers come in; they deserve success as much as anyone. Don't get me wrong, once in a blue moon I yearn to do something that pushes the boundaries of not only my skills but of cinema's world also. But then with critical acclaim comes loss at the Box Office and no one deserves to lose. Now I am excited to go back to hearing people laugh in my films rather than sniffing and sobbing. It won't be forever but I need a good comedy like Thank You to surprise my fans again. But no, I will never turn my back on serious cinema; sometimes it can be the greatest work in ones career! Does that mean with Thank You, you are positive than ever before that there is a good opening waiting to happen? Come on, I am too wise to even think or speak the words of 'Rest assured there will be a terrific opening'. Having said that, I do have a very wonderful feeling in my stomach this time around and no amount of humble nerves can take it away. All of this certainly means that I must be very excited about Thank You. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl started shooting yesterday. And straight away Ricky Bahl has taken his victim for a 'ride'! Seen here in the pictures is Parineeti Chopra (who is being launched by YRF in this film) along with the charming Ranveer Singh, who plays the lead role as a conman. Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl is a fun-filled 'rom-con' where a smooth and charming conman, Ricky Bahl, cons girls for a living but finally meets his match. Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film stars the lovely and endearing Anushka Sharma in the lead role, along with Dipannita Sharma and Aditi Sharma. The film is planned for a 9th Dec 2011 theatrical release worldwide. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | She is the undisputed queen of Bollywood, with her elegance and suave that exudes oomph and yet maintains the air of royalty, its no big miracle then that Kareena Kapoor literally rules the industry. This April turn up the cooler as Kareena Kapoor scorches the cover of the third anniversary special of Grazia. Kareena looking dapper in a white lace blouse and skirt by Dolce & Gabbana portrays the uber cool attitude that's needed to outlast this summer wave. Accessorized well with leather bracelet and crystal ring from Louis Vuitton, Kareena is simply captivating. Whats more... the magazine delves into Bebo's life spanning her years before her entry into films and yes her eventual conquest and rise to dominate the industry. Speaking about this, Kareena recollects her announcement as a kid, "I'm going to be a huge movie star, you wait and watch. I'll make chhutti of everyone". All this and more in the latest issue of Grazia. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With a feminine face fallen from grace, it's only appropriate that Anushka Sharma features in the cover of this month's edition of Verve. Bollywood now has its eyes peeled and its ears perked up as Anushka gears up to seduce the industry with her amazing acting prowess. Having been only 3 films old, this girl has made quite an impressive mark in the "movie scene". The interview with the model turned actress has her opening up about her flying start, the media, getting a foothold in the industry and her love for traveling. Speaking about her voyage so far Anushka says "Nelson Mandela once said your journey continues as long as you live. I don't want to be acting all my life. After a point I want to completely cut off from it and lead a normal life." Anushka also speaks on the pitfalls of taking things too seriously; she says, "The bad side of the industry is that sometimes you start to take things and yourself too seriously. You get lost. But when you step out you realize it's not real, it's temporary." Anushka also speaks about her next film Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl, her platonic friendship with Ranveer and her experiences in the Indian film industry. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | She may be advocating alternate education in her latest movie F.A.L.T.U. but in real life she is pretty much following the norms of the society. She knows that being merely a school pass-out won't really take her ahead in her life and hence Puja is now looking at completing her college education. While her film career has just kick started with the surprise success of F.A.L.T.U. and she is sure that it would be only movies for next few years, at the least she is aiming at being a graduate. "This is a promise that I made to my mother before I stepped into the world of glamour", says ex- Miss India Universe, "In fact I had enrolled myself in New York University a few years back but since I didn't like it there, I came back. Now that F.A.L.T.U. has released, I do wish to pursue my studies further." Not many are aware that Puja was a brilliant student during her school days before her father met with an untimely death. She struggled to give her board exams and some how managed to finish her school before she gathered herself all over again and made up her mind to enter the glam world. "Those were difficult times but I couldn't ponder over it much. Yes, I was depressed for quite a while but I and my mother were each other's support system. She also further motivated me to do what I wanted to but with a condition that I won't ignore my academics altogether. Ironically, F.A.L.T.U. could well have been my own life story. By no means am I shunning away formal education", says Puja. When asked about the subject that she would want to pursue, she said, "I am looking forward to studying English (Hons). I may not be going to college for regular classes but would prefer taking the course online." Guess, Puja won't be 'faltu' anymore. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | She played a traumatised wife in her last release Aakrosh and found quite some flak coming her way for not raising her voice even though she was just playing an on-screen character. The commercial failure of the film has made her realise that she can't be playing a weak character anymore, something that has made her go through the scripts of her upcoming films all the more carefully. "She has played a woman of substance in most of her films. She has held her own despite all the boys around, whether it was Ajnabee or her last thriller Race. Due to that when she was beaten black and blue by Paresh Rawal who played her husband in Aakrosh, audience just couldn't digest it all", says a friend of Bipasha. Other than this, since Bipasha's screen time was pretty curtailed too, there were murmurs in the industry about her choice of roles. Since Lamhaa, which had released a few months back, and before that Pankh, an offbeat film, hadn't made her gain anything commercially at the box office, Bipasha pronto decided to take stock of her career. "Well, the feedback from Aakrosh was plain and simple that audience doesn't want to see me as a weak woman. They expect me to hit back right back where it hurts most", laughs Bipasha who is taking light of the situation, "Audience just don't like to see me getting beaten up and traumatised." This is one of the major reasons that prompted her to go by her on-screen image and do something that makes audience relate to her in a way that they have always perceive her to be. "Yes, honestly it has been a conscious call actually", confesses Bipasha, "This is where my upcoming films like Dum Maaro Dum and Players come in. One is an edgy dramatic thriller and another is a cool action thriller. In fact I want to do more action now and kick the butt. It's time to give it all back to those who felt I was willing to take things lying down." Guess it was pun intended Bipasha. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rupa Manjari is excited like never before | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When it comes to hotness quotient, Ranveer wins for Anushka hands down

He arrives in school much before any of his classmates to drum away his blues on empty benches. He stuffs himself with water instead of the nutritious food that his schoolmates relish during the lunch break. He covers up for his lack of social rank with the finesse of the most seasoned diplomat. Who is this child? What is he like? Why is he anything like he is? Wouldn't you like to know? Meet Stanley, the protagonist of the much awaited Stanley Ka Dabba. Stanley Ka Dabba is the latest offering from the insightful writer-director, Amole Gupte that throws light on the everyday life of a school going child. The character, Stanley, tugs at your heartstrings with his indomitable spirit, while warding off the hostile world he is surrounded by at all times, everywhere. The film reveals how this is child-soldier, rises above his choking real life situation on the way setting a template for all whiners to learn from, even emulate. Like most others his ilk, Stanley loves to be amongst friends and win the appreciation of his peers and colleagues. He uses his sparkling wit and innocent wisdom to impress everyone he touches. At times spinning-a-yarn amongst friends about his mother's flight, while on occasion conjuring some heartfelt poetry to impress the lovely English teacher, Rosy Miss (Divya Dutta). There are though teachers like the pungent Science Madam, Ms Iyer (Divya Jagdale) whose rigid beliefs smother Stanley's innovative science experiment with all the contempt at her disposal. Then there is the gluttonous Hindi master, Verma Sir (Amole Gupte) who emerges as the catalyst in helping the boys bond for Stanley's dignity and rightful place in the school. The camaraderie between the boys comes to the fore when they thwart Verma Sir's desperate attempts to polish off their dabbas with all the guile at their disposal. The gang makes the 'invincible' Verma show his true vulnerable self for once as he marches from one possible hideout to another in the school premises trying to binge upon their home made food. Stanley, the little protagonist of Amole Gupte's, latest film Stanley Ka Dabba shows how, like the proverbial lotus, can one rise above all the filth around and makes the world a better, beautiful place to live in. The way he goes about bringing cheer to his colleagues and his little friends is what makes him the Stanley we all need to be in today's day and age.
